The Stearman was introduced in 1934, but is most famous for its role as a primary trainer during World War II. Over 9,800 Stearmans were built before production was stopped and the type helped many US military pilots earn their wings during World War II. Originally fitted with either a Lycoming or Continental radial engine of 220 horsepower, after the war many were converted for crop dusting and other civilian uses, and owners fitted engines of up to 450 horsepower. Gauntlet's Stearman was built in 1942 and delivered to the Navy, where it served throughout the war. Gauntlet's Stearman is available for training and rides May 1 through October 31 each year.
